Reading Train Student’s Book 2
Reading Train Student’s Book 2 is the second book of the Reading Train series, a graded reading course for young learners of English. It follows Book 1 and is written for children who can read very short passages and are ready for somewhat longer stories, more new words, and questions that ask a little more of them.
Each unit is built around a short reading passage — a story or a simple text about the world — supported by illustrations and followed by vocabulary work and comprehension questions. The level rises gently compared with Book 1: sentences are a little longer, the same words return in new contexts, and children begin answering in fuller sentences.
The book is used in primary English reading programmes and works well for guided reading at home, giving young readers regular, achievable practice that steadily builds fluency and confidence.

Reading Train Student’s Book 2 is the middle volume of the Reading Train graded reading series for young English learners. It takes children who have finished the very short texts of Book 1 and gives them passages of moderate length on familiar, engaging topics, each with its own set of new vocabulary and comprehension tasks. The grading remains careful — no sudden jumps in sentence difficulty — so that reading speed and understanding grow together. Compared with the first book, there is more emphasis on answering in complete sentences and on meeting words again in different contexts, which is how vocabulary becomes permanent. It is a standard second-stage reader for primary English classes and for parents continuing a home reading routine.

About This Book
Reading Train is a three-book graded reading series for young learners of English. Student’s Book 2 is its middle stage: the point where children move from their very first short texts to passages that tell a fuller story or explain a simple topic over several paragraphs, while the language remains strictly graded.
What Young Readers Practise
Reading Longer Passages
The passages in Book 2 are longer than those in Book 1, with more events in each story and more detail in each informational text. Children practise reading in phrases rather than word by word, which is the beginning of real fluency.
Vocabulary Growth
Every unit introduces new topic words and then reuses them — in the passage, in the exercises, and in later units. This recycling matters: a word met once is forgotten, while a word met several times in different sentences becomes part of a child’s own English.
Comprehension and Sentences
Questions check understanding of the passage and increasingly ask for short written answers in complete sentences. Children also sequence events and pick out the main points of a text, early versions of the study skills they will need later.
Key Features
The series’ careful grading is the key feature: Book 2 stretches readers without breaking their confidence. Illustrations still support every text, units follow a predictable passage–vocabulary–questions rhythm, and the step up from Book 1 is small enough for children to feel progress rather than difficulty.
Who This Book Is For
It is intended for primary-age learners who have completed Reading Train Book 1 or who can already read very short English passages — typically children in the early-to-middle primary years — and for their teachers and parents.
How to Use This Book
Preview the pictures and title together and guess what the passage will be about. Let the child read it independently, help only where meaning breaks down, then work through the questions with the text open. Re-reading a passage a day or two later is a simple, effective way to build speed.
